Let's upload some new dance moves! -

Last Sunday (06SEP09), I went to the 2009 Brazilian festival in Yoyogi park.

And during a few seconds, I shot a scene where a brain is imitating almost instantly another brain's behavior: dance moves, to be more precise.

This is a good example of a vertical meme transmission
, from a mother to her daughter.

Besides, you can see that small girls are particularly good at uploading or imitating new dance moves. (Have a look at the
Macarena
)

By the way, I realized, once again, that dancing is an important
memeplex for Brazil culture(*).♥

(*) "culture" is a very vague concept. A culture is just a special big memeplex.

    English Vers.
In Japan, a mother and her daughter would not do that just because they think it is embarrassing.
In Brazil, I suspect dancing must be a meme that everybody acknowledges unconsciously, thus the absence of Shame.

julianamonik, this is it. The meme has no shame at all.

  3. Very interesting. This is not something that I would usually think of as a meme, but I guess by definition it is exactly that. Very good example.

On a somewhat related note, I seem to have developed a habit of sticking out my tongue when I'm concentrating on something. and I was surprised to find last year that my grandmother does exactly the same thing. Maybe I picked it up subconsciously when I was young? Who knows.

But these kind of imitations certainly have a viral nature. I wonder if marketing companies are leveraging these principles as well as they could be.

  5. Rick, I think there are two factors regarding your tongue.
You must have a gene that encodes some muscular contractions and lets you do that more easily than average. That s for the physical aspect.

But having that physical ability does not necessarily compel you to do that.

The question is do you have that tiny piece of mind software, called meme, that asks you to stick out your tongue?

The answer is apparently yes. And where did you get that meme?
Well it is likely that it comes from your grandmother.
It must be an example of vertical meme transmission. And you did that by imitation, which is the equivalent of the copy function in a Turing machine.

As for the marketing stuff, I think you re right, we should use memetics to understand the viral stuff.
    3 things: fecundity 1), longevity 2) and heredity 3).
So you want something to spread in a lot of brains 1), you want something to last for a long time 2) and you want something that does not change 3)

Twitter is a good example of such a powerful meme. But memetics does not tell you how to get high 1), 2) and 3)....

At BunkerSofa, we believe that one key is simplicity. But it s not enough....
